What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurological disorder that affects your ability to focus, and can significantly impact multiple areas of your life. It can be caused by genetics, environmental factors, or disruptions in development.

In children,

It’s often first suspected when they have trouble sitting still in school or concentrating on their work. They seem frustrated, easily distracted, or have to repeat instructions to try and grasp the concept.

In adults,

ADHD is easily missed, as it’s often misdiagnosed as anxiety – especially in women. They experience challenges with forgetfulness in daily activities, difficulty waiting one’s turn, excessive talking, restlessness, impulsive decision-making and emotional reactions, and frequent job changes or career shifts.

How Does ADHD Treatment Help?

It happens again and again – you start a task, only to be distracted by something else that needs to be done, and then something else, and before you know it, hours have gone by and you haven’t gotten anything done. Since ADHD primarily affects focus and attention, managing time becomes a challenge, leaving people feeling unproductive, or even lazy. In therapy, we can equip you with helpful strategies so that you can get the most important things done while making time for plenty of downtime or activities that you enjoy:

  • manage your time more effectively,
  • have a plan for distractions,
  • stay focused and be more productive
  • create routines, and
  • break tasks into more manageable steps
While factors such as nutrition, exercise, and stress levels don’t cause ADHD, they can contribute to how it affects you and can become an important part of managing your symptoms. Exercise, for instance, can give your brain a boost of serotonin that helps improve your focus for some time. Many people find that improving their diet, incorporating regular physical activity, and developing effective stress-management techniques can significantly enhance their ability to cope with ADHD. In therapy, we can look at your lifestyle and suggest practical tips that can make a big difference in how you feel and function in your daily life.
ADHD often presents with a comorbid condition such as anxiety, sleep disorders, or a learning disability. In therapy, we take a holistic approach, looking at the whole picture rather than just one aspect of your mental health. By understanding and treating these interconnected conditions, we can develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses all facets of your well-being. This approach not only helps in managing ADHD more effectively but also improves overall quality of life, making day-to-day life easier and happier.
Inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity can make school challenging. Kids end up frustrated when there is a disconnect between how they are being told they are supposed to behave and how their body and brain are behaving. In therapy, we can help find a learning style that works best for your child and collaborate with teachers and the school staff to discuss strategies to support them – like extra time for tests, breaks during class, or a quiet place to work. By working together, we can make sure your school day is set up in a way that helps them learn and succeed, making school a better experience for your child.

Questions About ADHD Treatment

Have another question?

Therapy provides strategies that go beyond symptom management to offering practical tools to enhance focus, coping skills, and navigate daily challenges with newfound confidence.

Our approach combines mindfulness techniques, time management strategies, and talk therapy. Together, we will develop a plan for modifying areas in your life that will make living with ADHD easier. This can include learning plans in school, routines at home, and more.

While therapy doesn’t replace medication, it works hand in hand, addressing the behavioral and coping dimensions. Together, they create a powerful synergy, offering a more comprehensive strategy to manage the multifaceted aspects of ADHD. At our clinic, we don’t prescribe medication, but if therapy shows that medication could be helpful, we will refer you to a trusted physician.

Improvement takes time, and everyone’s journey is different. With regular sessions, you may see positive changes in a few weeks or months. Every step forward is progress, and we will adapt our approach to meet you where you are at.
